Rep. Mike Thompson, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 4th district, shared a series of posts reflecting on civil rights and current political issues between January 19 and January 20, 2026.
On January 19, Thompson marked Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by stating, “On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we honor the fight and the dream that helped transform our nation and advance civil rights for all Americans. While we celebrate his legacy, we know there is still work to do to ensure equality for all.”
A day later, he addressed concerns about U.S. foreign policy and military involvement abroad. In a post dated January 20, Thompson wrote, “The president and his administration are making Americans less safe and putting our military members in harm’s way for oil. I’m voting NO on any funding for ICE or any war for oil in Venezuela.”
Later that same day, Thompson reflected on his personal experiences during the civil rights movement alongside late Congressman John Lewis: “As we honor the giants of the civil rights movement, I’m proud to remember my friend and colleague John Lewis. Walking with him across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, where he was brutally beaten for demanding equal rights, was one of the most profound experiences of my life.”
Mike Thompson has represented California’s 4th congressional district since 1999 after succeeding Frank Riggs. He was born in St Helena, California in 1951 and continues to reside there at age 72. Thompson earned a Bachelor of Arts from California State University, Chico in 1982.
