Rep. Mike Thompson, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 4th district since 1999, addressed a range of national issues in a series of posts on February 7, 2026. Thompson commented on economic challenges, gun violence affecting children, and legislative efforts to prevent presidential profiteering.

In a post made at 16:00 UTC, Thompson highlighted concerns about recent job losses: “Layoffs in January were the highest to start a year since 2009. The economy continues to suffer under the Trump Administration, and hardworking Americans are paying the price. I will never stop fighting to create jobs and support workers, especially at a time when Americans are” (February 7, 2026).

Later that day at 20:30 UTC, Thompson focused on gun violence among children and public support for universal background checks: “Gun violence continues to be the number one cause of death for children in America, and 90 percent of Americans support universal background checks for firearm purchases. As Chairman of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, I will never stop working to enact sensible” (February 7, 2026).

In his final post at 22:00 UTC, Thompson discussed legislation aimed at preventing personal financial gain by public officials: “No public official should profit from their position, and that includes the president. I introduced the Prevent Presidential Profiteering Act to tax 100 percent of legal settlements paid to presidents so our tax dollars cannot be pocketed for personal gain.” (February 7, 2026).

Thompson has served in Congress since replacing Frank Riggs in California’s 4th district in 1999. Born in St Helena in 1951 and currently residing there at age 72, he holds a BA from California State University, Chico earned in 1982.
