Rep. Mike Thompson, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 4th district, has recently used his social media platform to address concerns over Republican trade policies and immigration enforcement procedures.
On February 11, 2026, Thompson criticized Republican leadership for their approach to trade legislation, writing, “Republicans’ trade policies are so unpopular that Speaker Johnson is holding a vote in the dead of night to protect Trump’s harmful tariffs.”
Later that day, he provided an update on legislative action regarding tariffs: “Last night, I voted to begin the process of rolling back tariffs that are driving up costs for American families and straining relationships with our allies. Today, I’ll vote to end the so-called “emergency” tariffs on Canada and get to lowering costs for the American people.”
In a separate post on February 11, Thompson addressed issues related to immigration enforcement and constitutional rights. He stated, “America is a nation of laws. That includes the Fourth Amendment. Stephen Miller has called requiring a judge’s warrant before entering someone’s home a ‘nonstarter’ in ICE funding talks. The government should not be able to enter your home without judicial approval.”
Thompson’s remarks come amid ongoing debates in Congress over tariff policy and border security measures. As a long-serving representative—he succeeded Frank Riggs in 1999—Thompson has frequently commented on national economic policy and civil liberties issues. Born in St Helena, California in 1951, Thompson continues to reside there at age 72 and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Chico.
