Rep. Mike Thompson, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 4th district, used his social media platform on May 6, 2026, to highlight a series of national issues ranging from the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous peoples to gun violence and the recognition of nurses.

In a post early that day, Thompson addressed the ongoing issue of unsolved cases involving Indigenous peoples: “Behind the 4,200 unsolved cases of missing and murdered Indigenous peoples, there’s a family who never stopped searching. That’s why I cosponsored a resolution commemorating today as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Awareness Day to make sure we always remember” (May 6, 2026).

Later, Thompson marked the third anniversary of a mass shooting in Allen, Texas by calling for legislative action: “Three years ago, eight innocent people lost their lives today during a shooting in Allen, Texas. Americans should not fear for their lives while out shopping, or anywhere else they go. We need sensible gun violence prevention legislation now.” (May 6, 2026).

On the same day during National Nurses Week, Thompson acknowledged the contributions of nurses across the country: “During National Nurses Week, let’s take a moment to thank all the incredible nurses who help keep us healthy and provide essential support for patients. And a special shoutout to my favorite nurse, my wife Jan.” (May 6, 2026).

Thompson has served in Congress since replacing Frank Riggs in 1999. He was born in St Helena, California in 1951 and continues to reside there at age 72. He holds a BA from California State University, Chico.
