Rep. Mike Thompson, who represents California’s 4th district in the U.S. Congress, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing ongoing political and legislative issues, including the federal government shutdown, deployment of National Guard troops, and mental health care initiatives.
On October 5, 2025, Thompson questioned Republican lawmakers’ willingness to negotiate an end to the government shutdown. He stated: “Are Congressional Republicans ready to come to the table to negotiate? Democrats are here ready to end this shutdown and prevent price increases for your health care.”
Later that day, he criticized President Biden’s response after a federal judge in Oregon blocked efforts to federalize the Oregon National Guard. Thompson wrote: “After a federal judge in Oregon blocked the President from federalizing the Oregon National Guard, he’s now deploying 300 California National Guard personnel to Oregon. This is wrong and it’s a dangerous attempt by the President to exert authoritarian rule over the American” (October 5, 2025).
On October 6, 2025, during Mental Health Awareness Week, Thompson highlighted his legislative efforts: “It’s Mental Health Awareness Week, and we must do more to break stigma and expand care. That’s why I introduced legislation to expand public-private partnerships to research mental illnesses—because every family deserves access to the treatments they need.”
Mike Thompson has served in Congress since replacing Frank Riggs in 1999. Born in St Helena, California in 1951 and currently residing there at age 72, he earned his BA from California State University, Chico in 1982.
