Rep. Mike Thompson, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 4th district since 1999, addressed several national issues in a series of posts on his social media account between September 4 and 5, 2025.

On September 4, Thompson marked the anniversary of a tragic event, stating, “One year ago today, four people were killed and nine more were injured in a mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia. Enough is enough. While a number of Republicans have joined our efforts to address gun violence, I urge more to join us to pass sensible legislation to https://t.co/am278mvvgi”. The statement reflects ongoing debates over gun control legislation following incidents of mass violence.

Later that day, Thompson commented on bipartisan opposition to proposed federal budget cuts for medical research. He wrote on September 4: “Our combined efforts to call out the bad policies of this administration are gaining support. Glad that House GOP members have joined Democrats to say “no” to the President’s cuts to NIH research funding. Forty-four percent of global medical research comes from the United States”.

On September 5, Thompson reacted to recent economic data by saying: “August’s jobs report is alarming, coming in well below economic estimates. In addition, unemployment rose to 4.3 percent. The President’s economic agenda is slowing our economy.”

Thompson has served as the representative for California’s 4th district since replacing Frank Riggs in 1999 and currently resides in St. Helena, California at age 72. He holds a BA from California State University, Chico (Fact sources: see above). These recent statements highlight his positions on gun control measures, funding for medical research—which he notes comprises nearly half of global output—and concerns about national employment trends.
