Rep. Mike Thompson, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 4th district, recently used his social media platform to address issues affecting wildfire survivors and to raise awareness about wildfire preparedness.
On May 2, 2026, Thompson stated, “It is wrong to tax wildfire survivors on settlement money that is meant to help them rebuild their lives. Proud to work with my colleagues to extend our historic tax relief and ensure future settlements to survivors remain tax exempt through 2032, so Americans struck by disaster”. The post highlighted his ongoing efforts in Congress regarding tax exemptions for disaster survivors.
Later the same day, Thompson posted about community readiness during Wildfire Awareness Week in California. He wrote, “It’s #WildfireAwarenessWeek in California. Now is the time to start preparing for fire season. Please take steps to safeguard your home and create a plan of evacuation for you and your family. Thank you to all the local officials who are working to spread the word.”
Mike Thompson has served in Congress since 1999 after succeeding Frank Riggs and represents a region frequently impacted by wildfires. Born in St Helena, California in 1951, he continues to reside there at age 72. Thompson earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Chico in 1982.
