Rep. Mike Thompson, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 4th district, marked several significant events in early March through posts on his social media account.
On March 7, Thompson commemorated the anniversary of a pivotal moment in civil rights history, stating, “Today is the 61st anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the first march across Edmond Pettus Bridge. I was honored to join my friend Rep. John Lewis on a walk across this bridge, where he was one of many protestors brutally beaten while advocating for equal rights. Later that day, Thompson commented on recent employment figures from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics: “More lost jobs. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics February jobs report indicates what we already know: this president’s economic agenda is bad for workers. With 92,000 jobs lost last month and an employment rate rising to 4.4%, the economy continues to struggle under this” (March 7).
On March 8, International Women’s Day, Thompson recognized women’s achievements and highlighted local history: “On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the countless accomplishments of women throughout history. Thompson has served in Congress since replacing Frank Riggs in 1999 and resides in St. Helena, California. He was born there in 1951 and graduated from California State University, Chico with a BA in 1982.
