Community WISE (Women Investing in STEM Equity) is offering a virtual speaking event in order to raise awareness and inspire those interested in related fields of study.
Beginning on Feb. 18, the STEMspiration series will feature Katie Henry, a STEM expert who works to inspire women and girls in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.
“Join us with Katie Henry who will share her latest projects to create spy-girl dolls that communicate via secret LED and light sensor jewelry, code a candy machine in Python and start Street Corner STEAM, a neighborhood creativity project that anyone can lead,” the session’s summary stated.
This session is advertised as a fun one where coding and craft demonstrations will be held. Henry will also offer anecdotal stories from her past education and career, as she found her way to the world of STEM.
Henry serves as the Head of Partner Engagement for the Micro:bit Educational Foundation in North America. In her decade working in education, she has taught all ages from kindergarten through college and has been responsible for training over 3,000 educators.
She recently was asked to join the U.S. State, Federal and International Education Policy and Diplomacy efforts. In the past, Henry was a delegate from Pennsylvania to the State-Federal STEM Summit in Washington, D.C.
Henry’s session will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18.
Individuals interested in attending the session should contact Leslie Simmons at lsimmons@ctesonomacounty.org.
“Whether you are studying STEM in school currently or in a STEM career already, Katie will share tips for creating your best future and becoming a creative leader wherever you are,” the session’s registration page stated.
The March speaker for the series will be Dr. Daphne Miller, who is a physician and science writer.
