Earlier this month a bill passed that created a network for health care information exchanges across the state.
The legislation, Assembly Bill 1131, was introduced by 2nd District Assemblyman Jim Wood. Wood is the Chair of the Assembly Health Committee.
"[AB1131] would improve health care quality, equity and cost by being more effective," Wood said in a tweet on the day the bill passed. "Proprietary systems may exist but they are not talking to each other in a way that serves the public good."
Wood said that the bill's passing couldn't have came at a better time, with millions of Californians now eligible for the COVID vaccine. The legislator stated that one singular source to find available vaccine appointments would make the process much easier than it currently is.
In February, National Public Radio reported on how the current health information network has interfered with smooth COVID-19 vaccine rollout.
The bill will allow consumers and their medical providers to acquire streamlined access to health information and records, provide resources to overcome health information system barriers and improve access to health information.
