The dropout rate in Petaluma Joint Union High School District rose to 8.2% in the 2022-23 school year, according to the California Department of Education.

This translates to roughly 402 students out of 4,900 quitting schools before completing their education.

Data shows that this is the same as the statewide average dropout rate of 8.2% registered at the time.

California's 2024-25 budget allocates nearly $76.4 billion to K-12 schools, avoiding education funding cuts for the upcoming year. However, some contend that the state's funding formula may be counterproductive. A Reason Foundation study suggests that taxpayers have spent over $4 billion on more than 400,000 “ghost students” — over 6% of total state school aid.
