Sonoma County has announced that it has successfully vaccinated 15% of the adult population, which includes more than 50% of residents 75 years of age or older, a press release stated.

The total number of vaccinations administered through Feb. 9 is reportedly 74,426 with 37,038 being Pfizer vaccines and another 37,388 from Moderna. Overall, the number of residents within Sonoma who have received the first dose is 47,722 and another 13,352 have been fully vaccinated, the press release said.

Residents who have received at least one dose of the vaccine, which includes residents who have been vaccinated twice, is 61,074. While 15% of the population has been vaccinated, there are still many more to go, particularly those who are 70 years of age or older. Clinics are working around the clock to vaccinate Sonoma's elderly population against COVID-19, which has been particularly deadly for older age groups, especially those with underlying conditions.

"We're pleased that the data show that, despite the limited supply of vaccines that we have received, we are keeping pace, if not ahead, of many counties in California in terms of getting shots in arms," Supervisor Lynda Hopkins, chair of the Board of Supervisor, said in the release. "This is really encouraging and a reflection of the hard work that the county staff and all of our community partners have done to open up more than 20 vaccination clinics across the county in a matter of weeks."

That being said, Hopkins added that "we have a long way to go" in vaccinating the most "vulnerable" residents within Sonoma County. In particular, the Latinx community has yet to be widely vaccinated and reportedly has a large number of vulnerabilities. Sixty-five percent of individuals who have tested positive within Sonoma are reportedly part of the Latino community.

"For all the challenges that we have encountered, we have a good story to tell," Supervisor James Gore said. "We know that we still have work to do, but we think that putting our numbers in context paints a more complete picture of our successful initial rollout."
