On April 28, Chairman of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task ForceRep. Mike Thompson (CA-04) highlighted a recent Fox News poll that shows that the American people overwhelmingly support gun violence prevention measures that will help save lives and keep our communities safe. 

“The results of the Fox News poll make clear that the American people support the provisions being championed by the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force,” said Thompson. “The only place gun violence prevention is a partisan issue is in the United States Congress. My colleagues on the other side of the aisle must have the courage to stand up to gun lobby and join us in passing legislation that will help save lives. As guns kill American children at record levels, gun violence prevention is long overdue — elected leaders must find the courage to act on the will of the American people.”

Support for gun violence prevention policies highlighted in the poll:

• 87 percent – Background Checks for Guns
• 81 percent – Enforce Existing Gun Laws
• 81 percent – Legal Age 21 to Buy All Guns
• 80 percent – Require Mental Health Checks on all gun buyers
• 80 percent – Flag People Danger to Self
• 77 percent – Require 30-day Waiting Period
• 61 percent – Ban Assault Weapons
• 45 percent – Encouraging more citizens to carry guns to defend against attackers

The gun issue is important to voters. When asked to say, without the aid of a list, what they feel is the most important issue facing the county, 12% cite gun control/violence.  Economic issues are the only thing more important (24% economy, 16% inflation/cost of living), and no other issues receive double-digit mentions.

Half of voters are extremely or very concerned that they or a loved one will be a victim of gun violence (51%). That includes 44% of those living in a gun-owning household. Concern is higher among those under age 45 (59%), parents (59%), urban residents (65%), and nonwhite voters (65%).
