Mike Thompson, the U.S. Representative for California's 4th district, has utilized social media to address various issues concerning his constituents and broader national concerns. Through a series of tweets, Rep. Thompson has expressed views on recent developments that impact scientific research, community engagement, and public safety.
On April 17, Thompson commented on "Trump’s reckless war on science and diversity", specifically highlighting the "gutted over 700 NIH research grants—including a $36 million dementia study led by UC Davis." The grants were reportedly reinstated after significant public backlash, which Thompson described as "a small but important victory." However, he cautioned that the damage inflicted by this interruption in funding led to the loss of valuable time.
Later that day, Thompson reached out to the residents through another social media post. He informed them of an upcoming event by announcing "Knight’s Landing residents: My team is hosting in-person office hours next Wednesday, April 23rd, from 4:30pm to 6:30pm". This session, held in cooperation with Supervisor Angel Barajas, invites locals to discuss their support needs and promises more such engagements in the future.
On April 18, Thompson expressed his condolences for the victims of a tragedy at a university. He stated "Heartbroken to learn that two lives were lost, six people were injured, countless lives were forever changed after the deadly shooting today at Florida State University." He extended his thoughts to the Florida State University (FSU) community as they navigate the aftermath of this incident.
Rep. Thompson, currently serving in Congress since 1999, is a graduate of California State University, Chico, and originally hails from St. Helena, California.
