On April 20, Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04) released the following statement after voting against the Politics Over Participation Act, the Republicans’ transgender and intersex sports ban.
“Last year, Utah Republican Governor Spencer Cox vetoed a nearly identical bill to which the House voted on today, and I agree with him that this policy does not address the problem that the proponents of the bill claim it would solve,” said Thompson. “There is nothing in this bill that deals with elite athletics and this bill would only further harm an already vulnerable population.”
H.R. 734 amends existing law to make it a violation of Title IX for recipients of Federal financial assistance to allow transgender girls or women to participate in girls’ and women’s athletic programs. This bill would effectively ban all trans girls and trans women from participating on sports teams, depriving them of an important opportunity to be part of their school community, learn sportsmanship, and challenge themselves. It would also limit the ability of non-binary and intersex students to participate in these programs as well.
