In his tweet, he referenced a statement from the Wall Street Journal, highlighting the reality of tariffs as taxes. He wrote, "#FactCheckFriday The Trump Administration is claiming their widespread tariffs are a tax cut for you and your family. FACT: The Wall Street Journal has corrected the record, stating: 'In the real economic world, a tariff is a tax. If you raise $600 billion more a year in revenue.'"

On April 5, 2025, Thompson expressed concerns about the impact of President Trump's tariffs on California's agricultural community. He tweeted, "President Trump’s tariffs risk devastating California’s ag community. Retaliation from key trade partners could cost our state billions, hitting almonds, wine, dairy, and more.
