St. Helena – On June 24, Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04) released the following statement to mark one year since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and stripped access to reproductive care away from millions of Americans.
"In the wake of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade one year ago, we witnessed an attack on women’s access to health care and the dire consequences that followed. Tens of millions of individuals were stripped of their fundamental right to make personal medical decisions, creating desperation, confusion, and fear, while placing doctors in the impossible position of disregarding medical guidelines to comply with unjust abortion bans that compromised people's health and well-being. Today, one year since Dobbs v. Jackson, I remain committed to ensuring that health care decisions are made by patients, their doctors, their families, and their faith.
"Last Congress, I was proud to vote for the Women's Health Protection Act to create a statutory right for health care providers to provide reproductive care and that every American can receive the care they need, regardless of their zip code. The Women’s Health Protection Act counters the far-reaching impact of this decision and the subsequent state-level abortion bans, which have impeded access to life-saving medical services and placed undue burdens on those seeking reproductive care.
“I remain resolute in our pursuit of a future where reproductive freedom is not a matter of debate, but a fundamental right protected for all.”
