His statements come amid political tensions involving high-profile figures such as Elon Musk and former President Donald Trump.

On February 3, 2025, Rep. Thompson addressed the legal framework surrounding USAID in a tweet. He stated that "USAID was established to carry out the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 and is funded by Congress. Neither Musk nor Trump can unilaterally end this important work. These actions are against the law."

The following day, February 4, 2025, he continued to express his commitment to countering perceived threats to democratic processes. In another tweet, he mentioned his efforts by stating: "I am working to stop the President and Elon Musk's attacks on our democracy. Watch my video update below "

Later on February 4, 2025, Rep. Thompson responded to calls for immediate action from concerned constituents. He assured them of ongoing efforts by himself and his colleagues with a tweet: "To all my friends demanding that Democrats do something immediately to stop the illegal actions of this administration: My colleagues and I are working around the clock on this to restore order and the rule of law."
